First Friday Fandom has a long tradition of holding a 4th of July barbecue and potluck. Breaking tradition, the meeting will be held on July 4th, which isn’t even a Friday! We’ll meet in the afternoon around 2pm at our usual location at 1245 Allegheny Drive, with the plan of grilling in the early evening. The club will supply burgers, hot dogs, bratwursts, buns, and condiments. Please bring other dishes to share. Robyn called dibs on bringing baked beans, so don’t bring those. Guests are welcome!
For our non-winning Hugo nominee this month, we will be reading a novelette entitled “The Ugly Chickens” by Howard Waldrop. Mary says, “You have GOT to read this one!”. It lost to “The Cloak and the Staff” by Gordon R. Dickson in 1981 for Best Novelette. The novelette was featured on a podcast site called The Drabblecast. I don’t know if the text has been shortened for use in the podcast, but there is a full transcript available there, as well as the audio version. Find the story here
